Can anyone solve this video card upgrade problem?

I need some serious help with this problem, and I hope that I have furnished enough information to solve this mystery. Either that or I have an incompatibility issue that cannot be fixed. Read the following information please. Any help or suggestions about this issue would be most appreciated. Thanks,

An ATI Radion 9700 PRO and a Nvidia GeForce FX5700 had been previously installed in this computer and were very stable with respect to their video drivers.

Recently I have tried to upgrade this computer to the following graphics cards with the latest downloded Nvidia drivers: XFX Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT, BFG nvidia GeForce 7800GS, and a XFX Nvidia GeForce 7600GT. All have failed miserably with the same results!

Symptoms: For the XFX Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT, BFG nvidia GeForce 7800GS, and XFX Nvidia GeForce 7600GT were the following:

Screen freezes requiring computer resets or soft reboots, artifacts and onscreen object distortions, monitor momentarily clicks to black screen, then back to normal screen when using the mouse to click on something or scroll.
Distortions even in safe mode whereby mouse pointer arrow distorts Desktop screen as it is being moved. Works in 2D without any Nvidia driver installed; in other words, using just MS OS standard VGA driver. No 3D functionality. Occasionally, it has worked for short periods of time on a reboot only to quicly falter again. I don't know if it could be a faulty AGP slot or an AGP voltage issue between 1.5V and .8V, but it works fine with older AGP video cards.

I also need to mention that I use Driver Cleaner Pro to clean registry traces left behind for clean driver installs.

CPU temperature: 39C - 50C (under full load}

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton)
Running @ 2.09GHz
CPU Clock: 167MHz
CPU Ratio: x12.5

Memory: 1.0 GHz (2x512) Rosewill PC 3200 (DDR 400) memory

BIOS settings: Related to AGP or Video

AGP Aperture Size: [128]
AGP 3.0 Mode: 8X Note: Unchangeable - has auto detect system
AGP Driving Value [Auto]
AGP Fast Write [Enabled] Note: Tried it Disabled
AGP Master 1 WS Write [Enabled] Ditto to above note
AGP Master 1 WS Read [Enabled] Ditto to above note
AGP 3.0 Calibration cycle [Disabled] Tried it Enabled
VLink 8X Support [Enabled]
Video RAM Cashable [Disabled]
Init Display First [AGP]
Assign IRQ For VGA [Enabled]

Tried [Enabled] and [Disabled] with all these settings in every conceivable way possible.

Thanks again to anyone willing to give it a shot... or just advise me.

I think that this motherboard is designed to use AGP 4X and 8X video cards.
I also need to correct the model number I sent. It is an EP-8KRAI PRO. not an EP- K8RAI PRO. Thanks.
