Can copy and paste be detected?

I keep important files on an external HD that is password protected. I keep the very long password on a "password page" on my main computer hidden in a long document with about 250 or so other randon letters numbers and symbols. To access the password protected files, I copy from the password page the password, and then paste it to the entry field of the external HD. It's easier than entering it in letter by letter. My question is this. Is there any way if my computer and external HD is stolen to somehow figure out what part of the password page has been copied then pasted into the password field? If so, how easy is it to do this? And is there a better way to maintain password security? Thanx.

No, no one would be able to tell exactly what portion had been copied unless it was still stored in your clipboard (i.e., would show up should someone decide to hit paste), which is cleared whenever you shut down the computer.
