Can I change my CPU?

I had my computer built about 4 months ago by a friend. For some reason, I had it stuck in my mind that the processor he used was a 2.7 ghz pentium. Well, just today, I discovered that it is a 2.7ghz Celeron. Hmm, from the research I've done, it seems like the Celeron is kinda junk. I have it overclocked to 3.024ghz and it just doesn't seem that fast. Just found out things are getting a little warm too. Anyways, would it be wise to change it to a 3.0 -+ ghz pentium and is that even possible? I have a ECS L4VXA2 motherboard. Or would it be a waste of money and just keep the Celeron? I found a 3.0ghz pentium on newegg for around $100. Thanks

You sure your friend didnt jip you, and gie you a cheapy Celeron when he promised something different?

That motherboard can support processors that fit this criteria:
Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4 processors
FSB 533/400 MHz

Also that motherboard retails for about $28. How much did you pay your friend for this computers? Post the rest of the hardware, if he charged you $400-500 you could have been seriously jipped.

Hello, thanks for the quick replies. I will read CPU 101 too. I mostly surf the internet, download/watch videos, listen to/download music. I have some older Tom Clancy Raibow Six games that I "try" to play once in a while along with Quake II. My setup is as follows. L4VXA2 motherboard, celeron [email protected], 512 DDR (pci3200), old junk MX 420 video card (soon to be 9600PRO), Creative Labs 24bit sound card, 80 and 15 gig hard drives. I don't know if it just my video card slowing things down or if its the CPU. CPU is getting hot too. 76 degrees C. working on that problem. The computer likes to freeze up and it just seems like its struggling sometimes.

As I expected, with that hardware you can build it for less than $150-200. I do not mean to put down you hardware, that's not the point. But if you payed significantly more than $200, your "friend" really got a pocket full of money.

Well, the computer was free, allmost. I only paid $23 for the motherboard at newegg, my friend gave me everything else, including the tower. So, for $23, I can't really complain. I'm not even sure if he told me it was a pentium, I just assumed that because he told me it was an Intell. I used to use AMD (in my old computer) but my friend had a 2.7ghz Intell laying around that he didn't need so he used it to build be a pretty darn cheap computer. I guess I shouldn't assume things. Yeah, this isn't a reall good system but a big improvement over my 475 mhz AMD, no video card and 128 mb ram system that I had for 6 years. Just trying to get what I have now to run as well as possible without spending a crap load of money. Thanks. Oh, I did read CPU 101 and it seems that I can put the Puntium in place of the Celeron. Now, I just need to know if it is worth it or just keep the Celeron. Thanks

Ah that's good, pardon my asperitions about your friend. I also know what its like to have an older outdated system similiar to your old AMD, before i got this laptop I was on one quite similiar.

The limit to gameplay here is your MX420, not the processor. As far as my opinion goes, I'd say keep the Celeron and save for that video card. Those 2 games aren't really demanding, but for the MX420 they would max it out I'm sure.

Ok, thank you for your reply. Yeah, that video card sucks ass. I'll save up for the 9600 pro and keep the celeron. I'm going to order some new fans tommorrow to try and fix my heat issues and I hope to order the video card if the wife will let me.
