Can I get caught?

Help! I was wondering if my employer can see my visited web sites if I erase my history. I am an avid ebayer. The office is on a network, too. Thanks for the help!

If you do not want to get caught (using ebay or whatever), you could just install PortableFirefox on your USB-stick. It will only save history on your usb, and not on the harddrive.

Remember to clear your DNS cache : employers can view your DNS cache by doing ipconfig /displaydns

You can clear this by typing ipconfig /flushdns

If you use portable FF it hides your internet usage? Meaning, as long as I don't download anything there's no trace of it on the computers hdd? This would be awesome for surfing CF at work!

There may not be any trace on the computer hard drive but the employer can and often does monitor network and internet traffic. That is beyond the control of the computer user. The short answer is yes you can get caught surfing using a work computer.

Other way is depending on what system you use at our schools the teachers can remotley take controll of your computer and do as they please with it

Unless your computer is directly connected to the interner (which I am certain it ain't), they can easily monitor your traffic by logging the sites you visit - in a company network, all internet is likely going through one (or more) servers which log all activity on each client. Unless you bring your laptop with a wireless internet (i.e. not using the company internet at all), there is no way to browse the net without being caught (unless, of course, your workplace likes to implement really flimsy systems to log employees' activities).

If you go through any kind of proxy it is logged, by MAC and IP, and there is always a way to monitor what you do if someone is so inclined to do so. Why not just actually do work when you are at work?

Routers and switches also have their own logging, as well as any domain controller or server you connect to.

If you authenticate into a directory service there are log files there as well. While, it may not all be that simple to trace or as plain as day, trust me if someone really wanted to monitor what you were doing there isn't much you could do to stop them, even if running mobile firefox.

Unless you went to an extreme amount of trouble to cover your tracks.

Its not worth it. Just ebay it up at home. It would suck if you got fired for this. Plus, the economy is shit right now, you might get let go for such a minor reason.

Acually i am sure the computers are all directly connected to the net. There is no use in the company buying wireless cards and a router.

A couple of years ago I used this website and for the life of me cant remember the site but you would go to that site and from there you could access any website through their site. The only thing your network would notice is that you have gone to this one site (host site) don't remember what site I was actually looking for it a couple of weeks ago.

What? All business networks run of switches and routers, it is standard practice, plus routers offer security benefits.

If all of them had a direct connection to the internet that means that every client machine in your network would have a public IP, which I know for a fact is never the case.

My school and last job all directly connected to ethernet ports in the walls.
And where do you think those go? The network jacks on the walls go to a rack which (depends on the size of the business/school) connects all of the ports in each room to a patch panel, which are then tied to a switch(es), which then go either to a router and/or firewall, then to the internet. You would have to physically connect your computer to the modem to bypass it.

They don't usually go through the server, but they go through a firewall which keeps records of website hits, internet traffic per device, history, etc. When you are at work you shouldn't consider anything to be private.

I am always watching you, every thing you do!

We have some paranoid users at my work that put tape over the built in web cam in their laptops because they think we spy on them through the web cam, LMAO.....
