is there any hardware reason why a drive that is able to burn DVD+DLs not be able to burn DVD-DLs, or is it stricty a software issue?
Can I only burn DVD+DL and not DVD-DL

Check the specs on your drive, are you sure it's capable of burning them? I know my DVD-Recorder(works like a VCR) can record DVD-R +R -RW but not +RW. In other words, it's not uncommon for them to not be compatable with certain formats...
