Can I put an old hard drive into new desktop?

Hi :)

I have a 320GB Hard Drive from my laptop which I've sold, this was the only hard drive ever in the laptop and has the Windows 7 installed on it, I want to use this hard drive as a spare for my desktop computer so I can install just photos, videos and old games on it as it's only 5400RPM but if I just plug it into my desktop I guess I would have to format it, and lose all of my pictures? there are some pictures of family holidays etc, and my pets that I wish to keep and I'm not sure what I can do?

Please can someone help me out? thanks! :)

When you plug it in it will be detected and everything will be just as it was on the laptop. I'd copy anything you want to save to another drive and then format it just so it's clean, and then copy your stuff back onto it.

Thanks :) What would happen with the operating system installed on the hard drive? will it clash with my Windows 7 on this computer and mess some things up? thanks :)

No. You'll boot to your main HDD. It won't even look at Windows on that drive.
