can I put the dvd version of linux on CDs?

Hey I'm back I've been busy learning c++ and playing metal gear solid. I Downloaded Mandriva 1 DVD and I went to burn it to a DVD and I found that although it says right on the pc that its a dvd/cd writer it doesnt burn dvds. Can I burn it on a bunch of CDs and have it work? Could I download the 2 different CD versions instead and install both of them without it being 2 different partitions? I forget if I like KDE or GNOME so I want to get them both.

What program did you try using to burn the iso? type disk image or tarz? One program found good for burning iso image for Mandriva and other distros live or install is BurnOn. That also works great with GParted live for cd/dvd.

Are any of those freeware? When I just dragged the files to the drive in my computer and said burn (just for a test) it said please insert a cd...I dont even think it recognized the dvd-r

It said drive is busy or not ready. Also I got it from a mirror and there are 4 files..do I just burn the ISO to the DVD or what? It only lets me burn one file in the image/iso \ burner thing

Where are you trying to download the distro from? That could be a help here since the site will show what is available in waht format. The program you will end up using will have to be able to create "bootable" as well as data disks. Simply burning a disk image usually isn't enough. The free version of BurnOn seems to have that in mind with one annoyance!

After each burn an IE window will open for buying the full version. Yet the free one does great with Linux live as well as GParted. http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/

I went to the Illinois mirror from mandriva.com ( http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/mandrake/official/iso/2007.1/ ) Then I Looked at the Torrent which was going to take 4 days so I cancelled it and the files it was going to download were:
mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-dvd-x86_64.idx
mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-dvd-x86_64.iso
mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-dvd-x86_64.iso.sha1.asc
and I think
mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-dvd-x86_64.iso.md5.asc
so I downloaded all of those and nothing more..I just downloaded that other person's reccomended burner do I really need that? And could a loose IDE cable be causing the problem even though it does show the reading cd/dvd icon when I close the tray?

There are a total of 6 files to download seen there. The two with the "asc" seen at the end are strictly text files with one being the md5 checksum for verification. The screen capture shows what they look like once you are ready to grab all needed. http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/8684/mandrivafy0.jpg

DeepBurner also supports burning iso images to disk as seen in the information at http://www.deepburner.com/ But your mention of a combo drive that may be a cd writer/dvd rom drive type not a regular dvd burner may be your problem there. The make and model drive can be looked up to see if that's the case. That would mean being limited to cd-r type images. The actual size of the iso disk image itself is unknown here due to seeing the "IE cannot display page" error. That will tell you the size even if canceling the download right away.

If everything turns out to be less then 700mb you can burn a bootable cd-r for this. I haven't used DeepBurner to see if it can make disks bootable which is your main concern even for non live distros. I have the non 64bit version here that takes 3 cd-rs if that helps you there. By the look of the sizes seen on the other files you may not even need more then one cd-r since the 64bit release would be smaller in size?

thanks that helps quite a bit. The other program recognized it as a dvd writer so I dont get why it doesnt work. I still need to know why it will only let me burn one ISO file to the cd but I'm sick today so I'll try to figure this out when I get better.

I still couldn't open the link for the main iso to see it's actual size. The other two files that are actual downloads are only 87 and 89bytes in size which tells me right there that you only need one cd-r for the small distro not waster the space on a larger dvd blank plus slower format.

The Mandriva release downloaded here a few months back is actually larger in size with three iso disk images for the 3cd set from another site. But I could recommend downloading the 1CD spring release seen at http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone

The apparent problem burning those files is the format those may in? The program used even DeepBurner is another thing to look at. Finally the 260mb file size for that distro's main iso is seen at http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/carroll.cac.psu.edu/MandrivaLinux/official/iso/2007.1/ when going to download the file itself.

A quick burn to a cd-r with BurnOn should work out for you there without problem. Three of the links are for pages showing the files you should see contained inside the iso image itself. The remaining two are text files for download along with the disk image.

actually the main ISO for the DVD is 4.3 gb... and I don't really want the cd because I haven't decided if I want Gnome or KDE...which one is easiest to use?

The link you posted looks like one more a live distro since the only iso was the 260mb file mentioned and seen at the other download site as well. For a main file seeing some 4,2gb you are looking at a different release unless being directed to the site you have there.

Many I had seen where favoring KDE over Gnome. tarkin would be the one for advice on the two since I'm still kind of Linux newbie in many ways! :P That's mainly due to the ISP not having any drivers for dsl here." ggrrrr...! where's those drivers?" could be said to that. But one thing that brings to mind KDE being the choice was: "KDE fans should know that you can install KDE instead of GNOME by adding the boot parameter: tasks="standard, kde-desktop." hmmm...?

ok well I downloaded all 4 of the files for linux 1 cd KDE version and I tried 3 times to burn it to a cd but each time it wont boot...I either need a new program to burn and good intructions or instructions on how to do it on cdburnerxp pro. I did it before but I forget what I did.I tried making all 4 files into 1 .ISO file then burning as an image, then I noticed it said non bootable then I switched it to bootable and there was something about an emulator so I just said no emulator, then I tried all 4 files seperate and burned as an image and made sure to do that bootable thing and it still didn't work.

If you haven't even tried BurnOn what can I say here. You are not getting anywhere with cdburnerpro since that is simply burning data and not bootable disks. BurnOn has been a charm here for Linux isos period! Whether an install set, a live distro, or even GParted I may have to run the system file checker after the 4th or 5th burn but it does the job.

make sure the dvd media is compatible with the drive for one, and doesn't already have stuff on it. don't try to re-use discs from a previous failed burn, most of the time these will actually have some stuff on them and thus be unusable.

also make sure that the programs your trying are compatible with the burner itself. not all programs are compatible with all burners.

for example, i can't use easy cd/dvd creater with my 16x dvd burner, have to use nero.

Its not the program i've burned a linux distro before and it worked I just dont remember what I did and I actually did get it to work with cdburner xp pro once. I will try burn on if you give me instructions on how to use it...I could figure it out but I'd rather not waste more CDs while im learning. Also I am doing the CD version now not the DVD one because it turns out it isnt a dvd burner even though it says it right on the front..

With BurnOn all you do is follow the defaults with the burn wizard. I haven't used the program you have there. For other types of data disks I might use B's Recorder GOLD or Roxio's Easy Media Creator. BurnOn works well with eilther cd or dvd blanks. Make sure you are using the R- type not the RWs for this. If you are trying this with rewritable disks those will fail.

nope its R..thanks I'm going to test it out now...wish me luck :)
EDIT: ok I still don't get what I should do...there is 4 files and it only lets you burn one to the cd as an image...cdburnerxp pro lets you turn all 4 of the files into 1 .iso is that what I'm supposed to do?

On the Mandrive version downloaded here I made up the three cd set where the #1 cd started the installation right away. When going to the link you posted earlier for the 2007.1 collection there are no releases with only 4 files while the smallest sees 5 total. It sounds like you didn't download one or more files needed for what you were after there. The next two in size see 6 files. The mini has 5. The dvd-I586 has 6 as well as the dvd-X86 release.

For an easier download and choice between 32bit and 64bit versions this is the site that was used here. http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone You can see the options list at http://www.mandriva.com/community/mandrivaone
