Can I Record Directly To My Laptop HDD

Ok well i only have a 256mb SD card and plan on buying atleast 1gig for my wii/video camera. I have a pretty crappy camera but it gets the job done. On my old laptop i was able to plug my camera in and record directly to the Hard drive now with my new laptop i m not sure if i will be able to. I m not sure if i saw "Capture Video from device" on WindowsMovieMaker. So Long Story Short can i record directly to my hd from my video camera

If you're camera uses SD cards, couldn't you simply copy the files from the SD card to your laptop? As in accessing the card as a mass storage device.
