hi,
i have to replace the SATA I hardrive of my dell inspiron 1545
a friend of mine spoke to dell tech support about a similar matter and was told that a sata2 harddrive could not replace the sata harddrive.

is this true? i always though that it was a matter of speed meaning - the sata2 harddrive would work at the speed of a sata I

thanks in advance for your help,
Yuda

It should be s simple case of unplugging the connections and replacing the hard drive, the sata 2 drive will run but at sata 1 speeds
dont worry about what Dell say their staff are as good as useless, are you getting a new o/s to install on the new drive? or are you going to copy the Dell o/s to the new drive

They are backward compatible. If you have a problem some drives have a jumper you set to force SATA I speed. Like on Western Digital drives, you put a jumper on pins 5 and 6

thanks for the prompt replies
