can i run linux from a flash drive

i have winxp as my OS which i'm more than happy with ...but... i would like to learn linux(KUBUNTU) and rather than installing it on my harddrive or running it as a live cd, i would like to run it from my 1 gb flash drive until i get to know it better.
I have usb legacy turned on in BIOS so it should be detected but will it run faster than running live cd if it is on flash drive?

Kubunt won't fit on 1 GB. It does come with a Live CD though. You can always try that.

i did say that i didn't want to use the live cd version as it is a bit slow but i could put it onto my 80gb usb drive and therefore would it run faster than the live cd ??

Yeah, it should run faster (I haven't used USB hard drives though).
