can I take out the hard drive?

I actually want to have a hard drive storage device where it can accommodate a number of hard drives at the same time, but it looks like something a little out of my budget, so I don't want to buy it now but the HDD slots on my chassis is already full. I 'd like to buy an external desktop 3.5 HDD instead which is seal and ready for immediate use after plugging into the power cord. I'd like to know if I can break the case of the external HDD and take out the 3.5 HDD inside later?? Is it difficult and dangerous??
 
Basically depends on the drive itself. What is the model of external drive you have?
 
Seagate externals are fairly simple and I've taken 2 apart before. There tends to be tutorials on how to do so on YouTube.

When taking my 3TB Segate drive out, I cut myself on the plastic but it dint take too much time at all.

Western Digital drives seem to be more compact and I haven't fiddled with them.
 
could you not just get a hard drive enclosure and then you could put whatever hdd you want in it?im in canada and got mine at staples for $40.i had a spare 500gb hdd to install.

I think he meant dismantle the external drive at a later date to install in a PC (what I'm doing)...

But yes, a HDD enclosure might suit you too, Kenny.

I '' don't '' have a desktop external HDD now, but I actually don't want this personally because I will certainly get more HDDs later and its bulky size causes problems. Those array that could suit a number of hard drive looks like something expensive.

I probably look for WD My book or Seagate BackUp Plus, but I don't know which one is better. They are of the same price in my area.

If I have more budget to invest later, I will certainly want to break the case, take out the HDDs inside, and put it onto the array of hard drive vault

It looks like a hard drive enclosure is not a safe option for me, and probably most other people. It's just too 'naked' or 'exposed'. I am worried that dust and moisture from surroundings will cause problems more easily, won't it?

The Backup+ will be easier. All you have to do is take something flat like a screwdriver or guitar pick and bust a few plastic clips before ripping the thing up..
