can i upgrade my laptop? URGENT PLEASE

i have a lenovo 3000 v100 laptop with a INTEL T2400 @ 1.83GHz that i would like to upgrade a little bit. oh yeah, running XP pro SP3.

am i able to stick in...

4 gigs of ram, i'm thinking of getting 2 sticks of 2gig kingston DDR2 ram.
(there are 2 sticks of 512MB at the moment)

a new HDD, want to get a 2.5" 320gig Seagate or Western Digital HDD. they are all a common size right? so it will fit right?
(there is a 2.5" 100Gig used at the moment)

first time upgrading a laptop and its much easier than i thought as its all below behind a cover or two, just not sure of components in a laptop.

thanks for your answers!

There are two type of Hd.SATA and ATA (sometimes called PATA) for laptops. You should be able to look up the specs for your unit online. That looks like a older machine so I am betting its ATA and NOT sata.Stick with the 500 rpm vs the 700 rpm HD.They run cooler and do not consume batteries as bad.You can check what kind it is by opening the back of the HD area up and do a visual inspection. If its got a lot of little pointy things its a ATA.If it is solid looking and split in the center,,its SATA.

This is a SATA http://www.business-supply.com/prod...l-ata-5400-rpm-buffer:-8-mb-(pack-of-50-).jpg

According to this website 2gb is max you can go on the memory. You can go to the crucible website and have your computer scaned to tell for sure what memory slots are available and what ram you can stick in there.2 gb should be plenty enough to run XP and even Vista. With a clean fresh install of OS that puppy will be running great.

Not sure what your knowledge is of installing this stuff but here are the basics.

You will need to install the operating system,,in this case windows xp.You will need the disk. You pretty much insert the disk, turn the system on then when it prompts to boot from disk you hit enter then the disk takes over from there. It will ask you what you have to do at each and every step so be standing by ready to input data. Some factory disks have both windows and the drivers for you laptop on one disk, sometimes the drivers are on a seperate disk. You need to determine what you have before you start to install the HD.

When installing the memory..install one card at a time and make sure it registers before installing the other. This will require turning the machine off when you go to install the other card.

If it were my install I would not change out the memory until you have determined your new HD is running stable. Then power down and install the first card,,then if that is stable then the next one.

thanks for that!
my HDD is a SATA, no worries there.

why would i only be able to get 2gig of RAM? thats a bummer, really wanted to max this puppy out :(

i wasn't able to find the 'crucible' website u were suggesting, any links?

really?!?!
what a bummer :(

thanks for that!

one other thing, can i use KINGSTON ram (or similar) or does it have to be special LENOVO ram?

I am sure you can find some ram at Kingston that will work.

Here is the memory tester.http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

after you find what kind of memory it takes go to new egg to purchase.

Anytime I put new memory in a machine,,I generally will call Kingston to find out what memory they recommend for a particular machine. They are also helpful in knowing what factory rebates are available and can get you the best bang for your buck.

thanks for that memory tester, great tool!!

ended up getting 2 sticks of 1 gig kingston notebook ram, everything works great now!!
thanks everyone!!

most importantly check your manual. that is the best thing to do.
May I suggest using removable HDD instead.?
just my thought. :)
