Can I upgrade my Pentium D processor?

I'm very happy with my computer for what I use it for as far as ram, graphics, overall performance but I wasn't sure if I could make a processor upgrade. I know I have a Pentium D 805 Smithfield 2.66GHz socket 775. Can I upgrade this to any socket 775 processor or am I locked into this? It is a Dell E510 and I'm just not sure if you can upgrade the processor on a factory Dell desktop..

Considering:

What specs do I need to follow besides socket? Power consumption? nm? Will I use my current heatsink or the provided?

After researching your options, that is the best CPU you can get for that motherboard and BIOS. After looking for a motherboard that can support your RAM so you can just transfer everything over, all options I found would not be worth it. You might as well save up for a new system. In the mean time, to speed up your machine, you could consider a couple of things.

You could do a fresh install of XP, or upgrade to Windows 7. If you don't want to do these, best option is to do some tweaks.

That's all I have for you. Unfortunately, its an older PC and it may be time for an upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I had the same feeling...I think I'll wait and make a build of everything I want. Until then I'll stick with what I have if the change won't be significant.

Generally speaking, an OEM machine with that CPU only supports older 775 CPU's (Pentium 4 and Pentium D only) as the board lacks support for newer/45nm cpu's.

Everyone on this forum (mostly everyone) is helpful. Just found the site a few weeks ago and really appreciate everyone's assistance.
