Hi, first time poster here. Also, I hope this is the right place to post this thread and not the hardware section. If it should be posted in hardware please let me know. Anyway, I have a Sony Vio VGN AR730e multimedia laptop with a Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) and I'm trying to find info on upgrading the cpu. I've read articles on upgrading laptop cpu's and realize you can only upgrade if the cpu is not soldered to the board and only if they made a similar model with a faster processor. I'm not finding much info on line about this model and Sony doesn't provide much more than basic specs on their site about this model.
I need to run a video program called Cineform Neo Hd that requires a 2.6GHz Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor cpu and I want to be mobile while doing it. A laptop capable of this power is expensive to say the least and it would be much cheaper to change out my current cpu with a faster one . Any input given is appreciated greatly in advance. Thanks

Thanks so much for the input!! I looked at the chip at Newegg and it looks great. Because I'm not the most computer savy guy in town, how do go about finding out which options I have? Where do I go to get info like this? Can I type in my computer on the Newegg website and it will let me know my options or do I have to go to a website that lists compatable chips? I've been trying to find out more detailed specs on the mother board and if the cpu is soldered in this laptop but I must not be googling the right info to get it.

99% of all modern laptops does not have them soldered.there should be three plates on the back of your laptop HDD, ram, and cpu.unscrew the four srcews thats holding the plate on,than remove the heatsink and there will lay your cpu.im 99% sure that the cpu will work, but to be 100% sure you can call sony and they will tell you your max cpu supported by your mobo.

I opened the laptop and you were right about the chip not being soldered. Funny thing is I wasted 2 hours with Sony online and on the phone. They couldn't answer my question and danced around it the whole time. They gave me a phone number for a local Sony service center and the tech there told me ALL Sony laptops have soldered cpu's and are non removable. In any event, is ther a source somewhere that will tell me the max chip I can use on this motherboard? I'm just afraid I'll fry the mobo.
