Can I use a 3870 crossfire with a 4870?

u could, but it's not recommended. u get better performance if both cards are the same model, memory size, and clock speeds.
to use three monitor you wouldn't be using xfire, so you can use those 2 cards. but if you want to xfire to play games the computer will tone down the 4870 to match the 3870 specs. with xfire, one card's output is effectively disabled.
if you do plan to upgrade in the future, then yeah, go for the 4870, otherwise, get another 3870 and save ur money for a future build. you will still be able to use 3 monitors. :)
 
I was actually reading a PC builder magazine today, and they had some various benchmarks up of SLI and Xfire configurations. What puzzled me though, was that the 2 4850s were out paced by a 4850 matched with a 4870 in every test. Is this even close to accurate? I was under the impression that what zombine said was true, and running a more powerful card with a weaker one is just like running 2 weak ones. But according to these test scores, they fell in 2-3 fps shy of a genuine 4870 x2
