So I really want to get a Dell XPS 13 or 16. I don't travel that much but it would be nice to know that I have the option and not weighing 7.5 lbs. I think the 13" is too small for regular use. I was thinking... Would I be able to get the XPS 13 (with bluetooth), and use it with an external monitor and bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse but leave the computer itself closed and stored under my desk? Is that a feasible way to use it? I figured I could just turn the "closing the lid" setting to "do nothing" and use regular power settings. Any advice otherwise?

Potentially, yes. But as you probably know, you'll be losing quite a bit of power compared to a standard tower computer for a decent amount of money. I guess the question that I would ask myself in regards to this is if it is worth the amount of money to have a portable computer the few number of times that I would be needing to have a portable computer.

I have used laptops in this fashion in the past. Just make sure the unit has sufficient ventilation, especially if you plan on stashing it in a tight space under your desk.

Like DCIS said, would you be using it primarily as a desktop then? I'd really recommend just getting a desktop if 90% of the time it'll be that way, or if the travel option isn't necessary.

What would you need on the road?

As the others have said, if you could afford it, a more powerful desktop for less might suit you better. Then just purchase a low-end laptop for necessity while traveling.

Thanks for the input, guys. Unfortunately, I need the portability, and powerful portability. I actually just sprung and bought a fully loaded XPS 13. On the road, I will be using the same things I would at home. Plus, space constraints have me getting a laptop. Will the internal BT device support a keyboard, mouse and my cell phone all at the same time?
