...a WD Red or Purple drive as a main HDD (OS, user stuff, whatever else) in my computer. I know red is for NAS and purple is for surveilance but can I use these as normal hard drives?

Just daily backups. I have my computer set to defrag all drives after a backup, and I edit my backups often, so I need one ideal for heavy use.
Gonna kill your drives defragging so much. There is no sense in it. Once every six months is good enough.

Between game updates, personal use, the few things I use it for at school, and family, 2GB of data is either added or deleted from the machine almost daily so I want to keep a current backup.

So in your first post, you are asking about using a WD Red drive as a main HDD for the OS, user data, etc. Then you say you only use it for backups, which is it? Don't get a red drive for backups, that would be a good candidate for a Blue or Green drive, Red drives are meant for 24/7 use where there is consistent activity and uptime.
Will a lifted 4x4 Jeep work driving on the highway? Yes. Is it the right tool for the job? No.
There is nothing wrong with keeping a daily backup, it's highly recommended, John is asking why you defrag after every backup. It is not needed.
The more I/O operations performed on an HD, and especially SSDs, the shorter their life.

Just get a black drive.

Exactly, just pickup a blue or black drive. Both are designed for desktop use, with blue being cheaper and black being for the best performance.
