Can lack of RAM cause crashes?

I have an Acer Aspire laptop, just over two years old, with 448 MB of RAM [two 256 modules, but part is used for video]. When I run many applications [eg Photoshop, Word and iTunes] at the same time, or when I convert a video file to a different format, my laptop crashes. It doesn't freeze; it just turns off. I was wondering if this could be caused by a lack of RAM?

My laptop will take up to 2 x 1024 MB of RAM, and I have 27.3 GB HDD free out of a 60 GB hard disk.

Although your RAM is a bit low and Photoshop uses a scratch disc I would imagine it's working itself to the limit with more than one application open. I would be more inclined to look for a heat problem for the shutting down.
 
You could download a monitor and see if the temps rise dramatically when runninng your programs. Two that come to mind are
Speedfan
Motherboard Monitor
 
That to me is way to hot, I don't own a laptop so let's hope someone who does will reply on your thread. It could be the fan has stopped or slowed but needs dismantling to look into.

94C??????? Omg YOUR CPU IS FRYING OUT!!!! WAAAH!!!!!

Seriously...you should be really worried if your temps go 65C+ or something like that...it might be that the heatsink is stuffed with dust. As TFT said, you probably will need to dismantle your laptop, whatever the problem is.
 
65+ is bad? Ah.

When I started it up, the core temp was 27. From just opening word and firefox, it's already 36. The HD0 temp is only 22, though.

If I open it up, how could I tell what's wrong with it?
