Can LT boot to an external usb HD

Am using WINXP PRO ON COMPAQ LAP TOP.
IF I FORMAT AND PUT AN OS ON AN EXTERNAL USB HD
IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE IT THE PRIMARY BOOTABLE
HD DRIVE? WILL BOTH DRIVES THEN APPEAR IN 'MY COMPUTER'.

have you checked the different boot options in BIOS? i know it is an option on some newer boards, but im not sure about yours..as far as getting both drives to appear in my computer though, that will work for sure.
