Can my PSU handle it?

it says the minimum is 525. you will most likely be okay, but i really wouldn't risk it, especially if the psu is an older one (i mean one you have been using for a while).
 
Well I bought it used about a week ago and the guy said he only used it for a few months and he bought it brand new. It says it requires 38 amps and mine provides 50 on a triple 12 volt rail. So close.
 
Yes it will, that Corsair unit is extremely capable and it will run it. CPUs and GPUs actually almost never draw the amount of power that it claims to, and manufacturers always overestimate the PSU requirements because they have to take in account all the crappy brands out there selling units that are overrated by tens of hundreds of watts.
 
Cool, thanks. One more question, the 260 I'm looking at is being sold by a guy on Kijiji for $200. Is it worth it or am I better off getting a brand new Radeon 5770 for that price? I don't have a preference and I'm fine with dx 10, the clock speeds on the Radeon are faster but the memory bandwidth on the 260 beats it by almost 40 gigs.
 
Well I think I'm going to go with the 5770. I found the exact same card brand new for $230 and the guy is firm on his price, so not worth it. Do they make 4890's anymore? Or is that something I can only find on Ebay? The closest I was able to find was a 4850 for $270. Oh well, let's see how the 5770 works.
 
Always try to keep your PSU higher than what your system actually uses.

A old, cheap or underpowered PSU is a liability to your system.
 
the hd 5770 consumes a lot less power so now you should be more than fine. just overclock it. if you up the voltage you can get close to 1000 on the core pretty easily.

So will I be ok with what I have now? I've disconnected 2 of the fans. I've been reading and some people have had no problem where as others weren't able to turn on there machines at all. I guess my best bet is to bring my machine and test it out.
 
I dont think you will have a problem with any one of those. Not running C/F or SLI, but I think a single GTX 260/4890/4870/5770 would be fine. Any more upgrades I would suggest upgrading the power supply next.
 
A GTX 260 minimum is something like 500W and 35 amps, thats a total for the average system. The card itself doesnt pull any where near that much.

Well I just put my shiny new HIS 5770 in, holy cow. I've never been able to play Crysis cranked to the max, what a beautiful game. The fan on this thing looks cheap as hell but it's so quiet and cool. Thank you tax return!

That 520hx will power most any singlecard system, i'd be inclined to say even a 5850 could be run on the unit, barring alot of overclocking on the cpu/gpu of course. Its remarkable how much power people think they need for a singlecard system, if you type in "(GPU NAME) Power Consumption", many times you can find reviews on the card that show full load power consumption of a singlecard system with the card. For instance, two GTX285's and an overclocked i7 draw somewhere in the 550W range IIRC.
