Can not get on the Internet with XP, can do with 7

I am not sure if this is an OS problem or not, but here it goes.
I have a hardwired dual boot system in my computer, it runs either XP or 7 with a flip of the switch. (The switch powers either the HD with XP or the one with 7 at power up), and while I can get on the Internet with no problems when running 7, I can not do so when running XP.
In XP the OS claims that it can not find any network card to connect me to the ISP.
I loaded in the drivers that came with the MoBo with no success.
The MoBo is a MSI 880GM-51, the processor is a AMD PhenonII x4 840.
Why does it work in 7, not in XP with the same MoBo? What is so different in XP?

Any comments, suggestions?

BTW It was previously working in XP in the same computer, but I ran into problems with the OS and I thought I could solve those by reformatting the HD and re-loading XP back in. Since then, it will not connect to the Internet anymore.
 
Check device manager to make sure the lan driver is installed. I doubt it is. Look under network adapters.
 
As you suggested, I checked the Device Manager. Indeed, the Network Adapter was not listed as active. I used the DM as an installation tool to automatically install the driver from the MSI MoBo CD, and lo and behold, it found the driver, installed it and the Internet Access is working now. (I am using it right now!) Thanks fellow! That was a big help!

I do not quite understand it, for I installed the MoBo Driver CD right after I did the XP Installation, and had assumed it had installed all the necessary drivers. Never thought about checking the DM for conformation. I know better now in the future.
