Hello,

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop and I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and accidently erased Windows operating system. So now I only have Ubuntu but I was just wanting to try the OS out not install but I did by accident.

When put in the re-install windows vista disc that I got from dell when I purchased the laptop it will not let me install Vista or even the Windows XP disk I have.

I can not format the hard drive or just install a OS.
Here is what is says.

Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.

When I try to format my main or even second hard disk this is what is says.

Failed to format the selected partition. [Error: 0x80004005].

If anyone can help please post!

Shelby,

Ubuntu formatted your hard drive to a format other than NTFS, probably ext3. You need to, as linkin93 said, use a program such as GParted to re-format your hard drive to NTFS, then re-install Windows. This will best be accomplished by using the "live" version of GParted, which you burn to a DVD then boot from.

Or you can simply format your HDD completely using KILL DISK 4.1 inside of the DOS environment and then make a fresh Windows XP install by again creating the new partition and then format it into the NTFS file system using your Windows XP CD.
