Can someone answer this quick question??

When is it, that when we go to buy a portable USB memory pen such as a 100mb usb, and you put it in your computer click the properties to see how much space it has (just after you bought it) and it says something like 95mb on it?

i bought a 1gb usb mem pen and went home, put it in computer and checked the space on it, i didnt put anything on it ok? and it said 987mb on it!!! - where did the 13mb go? i expect to buy a full 1gb not 987mb!?

Is it a U3 drive by chance or does it have some program that lets it
boot programs, or is it just a flash drive?

Maybe if you bought one that has U3 programs on them. Like sandisk, they usually are U3 compatible flash drives. But just like when you load windows, windows takes some of the memory for the loading.

There is no storage device that is exactly capacity like it label. Most of it is occupied by filesystem. And the how windows calculate the capacity is differ from linux in example windows calculate 1 mb as 1024kb while linux calculate it as 1000kb. So don't expect the capacity is exactly like they said.

I understand what you are saying but 13mb of my 1gb brand new memory pen

Like he said, if there's no U3 bootable software on the drive, the
"13Mb" is probably being used for the file system.

it wont read the entire amount it uses the amount your missing to read the rest it isnt any boot drives they all don't read the exact amount

Ok, thanks anyway :D
- I just put my flash drive into a USB slot onto a different pc in my home (on the laptop instead of my desktop pc) and my 13mb is still used up!
how can i get it back?

- I know 13mb means nothing, its only a little amount of space but its 13mb lol

Don't format it into any filesystem. Making it raw volume.

Doing so you will never be able to access the drive.:P

There is no other ways. Just accept it the way it is..
