Can someone explain benchmakrs to me?

So I was reading under the OC sticky post about benchmarks, and I have no idea what this means? It sounds like a program that measures how your system is performing, but me being a noob to this forum I have no clue what these numbers mean. Should I try and run 3dMark03. And even if I do, whats a good score? Thanks.
 
Basically a benchmark utility is a diagnostics program that will perform stress tests on various hardwares in a system. For each type of program there's usually some method to weigh the results by visiting the main site for the program to see what each value represents. They are not all uniform. referring to the text files. For 3DMark03 you would have to registar first and then submit the results for evaluation. http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3582242
