can someone tell me my cpu speed?

I'm new to all this computer building so bare with me ok?
I bought some used computer parts and put them together but I'm kind of confuse about my cpu speed.
I've checked the BIOS and it was on 1400mhz besides the other two settings, "manual" and "1866mhz".
I've checked the processor in "system" and it said 2.8ghz and right next to it 1400mhz.
I don't understand this at all. Is my CPU 2.8ghz or 1.4ghz. My computer specs:

asus p4s8x-x motherboard
2.8ghz cpu (this is what the seller said)

Under the cpu speed option, it said if I want to select "manual",
the motherboard has to be in jumperfree mode or something.
What is jumperfree mode and how can I enter it?
hopefully someone can shed some light into this problem. any help would be appreciate it.

I would say your CPU is 2.8ghz. You cant really find a CPU now a days at 1.4ghz, unless you saved one from years ago. If I'm reading right, you have a Pentium 4?

yeah, it's a P4. If my cpu's a 2.8ghz wouldn't it say 2800mhz instead of 1400mhz or 1866mhz? I'm just afraid the cpu is 2.8ghz but the motherboard isn't using it to its full potential. according to the manual, it should be able to support up to 3.06ghz.

do you guys know anything about the jumperfree settings to enter manual? checked the asus' manual but can't find anything about how to do it, piece of junk.

1) download cpu-z here
2)once its downloaded open the winzip file
3)extract the files to a folder or desktop
4)Open cpuz.exe
5)press the cpu tab
6)you will see a title saying specifications and beside it the name and speed of your processor.

Ok. I've downloaded cpu-z and ran it:

specification: intel pentium 4 2.8ghz
core speed: 1866mhz

is the cpu running at full speed?

nope... im guessing he maybe overclocked it to 2.8GHz? if you select "manual" then you set the FSb and stuff yourself... but risk frying your cPU/mobo if you mess with the voltage...

so is this a cpu or mobo problem? basically there's 3 settings in cpu option:
1400mhz with a locked external frequency of 100/33
1866mhz with a locked external frequency of 133/33
manual with highest frequency of 166/33

I don't want to overclock or anything, just want cpu to run at 2.8ghz.

There's not an automatic setting?

If not, I'd like to know exactly what model P4 you have... I found another 2.8GHz, but I'm not 100% sure it matches yours(bus speeds and all) I know my AMDs better than intels :P Anyway, it's FSB should be set to 133, and multiplier to 21x. 21x133MHz = 2793MHz.

Ok I feel really stupid. I thought my processor has a FSB of 533mhz but it actually has a FSB of 800mhz. Only thing is....I don't know what CPU speed setting I should use. 1400mhz, 1866mhz, or manual? no automatic setting at all. cpu-z said 533mhz bus speed how do I change it to 800mhz bus speed? sorry people, I suck at this.

motherboard is asus p4s8x-x if that makes any difference

I checked up on the motherboard and it can only achieve 400/533 FSB. As for getting the multiplier up, do you know what bios revision you have? Perhaps you need to flash it?

yeah. I checked it out but it was a beta. I didn't want my motherboard to run on a beta. thanks though.

so is there no hope for me to get it up to 2.8ghz?

I found specs saying it was suppose to handle around 3GHz, so a 2.8GHz should be alright. I'm rather confused though. Eh...about all I can think of; perhaps there's a jumper or something. I highly doubt this, as typically if there's anything, it's for the FSB...

Maybe just scanning the manual would help...

yeah, I don't understand it either. the useless manual doesn't say anything about it. so the difference of 800mhz fsb on the cpu and 533mhz fsb on the motherboard isn't a concern?

I tried to set it to manual and set it to 166/33 but it won't boot up. weird. maybe I gotta buy a new motherboard.

Do you guys think because I'm using pc3200(ddr400) memory when the motherboard can only take pc2700(ddr333), that's why it can't read my cpu correctly? Does the memory effect CPU in any way?

I've tried to set to 166/33 but it kept resetting. the highest I can go to is 156, which is 2.16ghz. I give up. Don't know what else to do.
