Can This Upgrade Be Done & Would You Do It?

I have a 4 year old HP m260n Media Center Desktop computer which has worked pretty good with no real problems. It has a fast 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (whereby single CPU systems partially mimic dual-CPU systems -- thus boosting performance during high-drain procedures such as multitasking). As it is not worth me buying another computer as I'm use to & like everything on here, can I replace the motherboard & Pentium 4 with a new motherboard & a Core 2 Dual Processer? If so, will I notice a significant difference in speed (I have 2.5 GB RAM XP O/S, 120 GB HS)?
I figure it will cost me between $200-$300 in buying it & having a place install this. Coulld doing this cause any problems or complications? Is there a market for selling the old motherboard & CPU?

Or am I best just sticking with my current processer? It simply isn't worth it to me to replace the whole computer. Thanks for any advice. Oh I don't do gaming or any graphics applications on it.

You would notice a fair difference if you upgraded, but you might as well upgrade the whole computer. To upgrade the processor you need a new motherboard. You then need new RAM. Probably could use a new power supply... Basically you'd be left with the drives...though IDE(assuming that's what you're using) is getting less and less common. Most motherboards only have a single IDE controller on them, unless you get a PCI card with more.

Oh, wow, thanks for the info. To confirm what you said, I could not simply upgrade my Processer from P4 to Dual 2 Core by merely replacing the motherboard & processer but I would have to get different ram as well as a new power supply. If that's the case, I agree with you, I may as well get a new computer. I thought it would be a fairly simple swap. Thanks for your info.
