can you get a virus from a website?

I've always heard of getting a virus from an email. can you also get them from just visiting a website? when you get an exe file via email, do you have to open the .exe file to activate the virus, or does just saving it to your computer make it work?

If I could get a virus from a website, could you give me some of the most common ones that you have seen?

yes you can get a virus from just visiting a website
and you don't have to open the exe to active it
and there are tons of sites with viruses mostly porn stuff
so take care mate
 
Some sites attach malicious code to their cookies. If you have no security in your browser or firewall, they will send you lots of cookies that could contain malware. Basic browser security adn a good firewall should prevent this though.
 
I can tell you from personal experience that you can get viruses on your pc despite having browser security and a good firewall. Admitted it was IE6, but I had a virus get on my machine just by clicking on a dodgy link, despite having Norton Firewall. The information bar popped up asking me whether I wanted to download an .exe, so that was stopped, but Norton popped up saying it had detected a virus but it couldn't deal with it.

Rest assured, it is very possible to get a browser virus.
 
:P A simple answer is... yes you can, not just through .exe's you can get them through active X objects, Browser Help Objects, Cookies lots of things.... The most common ones are everywhere :P
Look in a virus dictionary :)

If your looking for the source code, stop now, you wont find it unless you want your government to come and arrest you for hacking :P

Most of the time Internet Explorer will warn you, with a yellow bar at the top of the page asking if you wish to install the ActiveX control.

Never click yes unless it's a trustworthy web site, i.e. microsoft.com. (Now this is gonna get some replies...)

E-Mail is another big source of viruses. In using bots you can take over someones computer remotely by sending them an e-mail and them opening it.

That depends on your security settings, for Internet Explorer I reccomend at least medium security settings.
 
u can get viruses just from being on msn put it this way the more windows u have open using teh internet the more ports are open and the biger teh chance of viruses now my question is if i only used my pc for gamming and i had a good anti virus would i have very low chances of getting a virus

you usually open ports for p2p programs and try to stay away from the standard known ports
they are most likely to get attacked
anyway
if you are not connected to the internet of course your chances of getting viruses are lower , if you transfere data with your friends through LAN or anything else , there is a possibility your computer can get infected
