Some dealers will sell new products on EBay rather then seting up a web site to avoid the costs of overhead and sponsorship by advertisers. $50 saved on a brand new drive is good while not dealing with anyone in case a defact drive is recenved and needs to be returned is another.
That's the main problem with buying on EBay and not a place like newegg or TigerDirect, mwave.com. Try price shopping around to see if there are manufacturer's rebates being seen at any of the regular online vendors before rushing into anything you may get stuck with if found nad or fails later.

That's apparently some vendor or service/repair shop looking to clear them from inventory seen there before the year is out. It's like an after holiday type sale. WD drives are generally good while I can't say anything from still having used the usb type seen there.
However you can now find 2tb external drives available at a high initial price close to $500-! There's even a new type of drive seeing only 1/2 the physical space of the typical ide or sata internal drive that will see into the terabytes capacity wise coming out!

As for the drives, the one on Amazon is the real Essential Edition as advertised on WD's website. The other one seems to be that guy trying to dump them, a couple of photo places, and the rest from sites in Russia. The part number he cites isn't even on WD's website.

It's definitely more of a private vendor trying to more or less "cash in" at this time. This is one reason why EBay is a risky place at times since you never know "just who" is trying to sell there while sometimes a private seller will sell used or new items when you can't find it at any regular vendor being out of stock.
Since I get real fussy on just who I am dealing with like a place like newegg and other vendors often I wait for a special that is readily know to be good like a mailin rebate or a sale put on by a well known vendor. Some single person vendors will sell on EBay at times while this lacks a degree of confidence. Around here EBay means finding something needed to restore an old system not something that will eventually be discounted by a reputable dealer.
Here I had looked into going for a 750gb sata to increase capacity due to video capturing and editing done here. It didn't take much to the 465gb of available space see 420gb filled when adding a few files for temp storage chew up drive space fast! For internal to replace one 500gb sata the 1tb WD Green Power series is waiting a price drop at the moment while pondering on the 2tb external models now seen as well.
