Can you use any brand of graphics card on any motherboard?

I've always used nvidia since i have been building my own computers because i had a very bad experience with an ati one when i had a system built for me many years ago.

I'm thinking of giving ati another try though because they seem to have been bringing out some very good cards recently, and as i am on a tight budget always for upgrading, it would be the cheaper option too.

However as i say that i am on a very low budget for upgrades and can only do it once in a blue moon i cannot afford to upgrade my motherboard AND GPU at the moment.

I am running an Asus P5N-E SLI (as the signature says) with 2x8600gt SLI. I know that the name of the moo has SLI in it and the chipset is nvidia but is it possible to use an ati graphics card on it, or if not, is it possible to use ati on a board that doesnt have nvidia chipset, regardless of the other chipset that is on it?

If you only plan on running a single card then yes you can run any card on any mobo, assuming it's the right PCI interface. The only problem you might run into, I was installing an 8600GT into a computer that had built in ATi graphics, so there was a conflict between CCC and NVidia Control Panel. I just had to go into the BIOS, disable onboard, and then uninstall CCC so not too much of a hassle.

In theory you can run a single ATI card on that motherboard. Although...many people have had issues running an ATI card on that motherboard.

Here is a link to the ASUS forum about your motherboard. It has tons of information about everything you could think of.

You ever have questions about your motherboard...just start a thread an PM me about it. I have been running the same board for a while:D
