can you use any laptop hd in any notebook?

i have a gateway solo 3300 and i want a cheap laptop hd...i bought the laptop off of ebay. Can you use any hdd in that laptop?

I dont think so, I bought a Compaq drive for My Toshiba and it didnt fit. I would have to say no, but I maybe wrong
 
yea make sure its the same type of interface... an ide drive would use a ribbon cable and a sata drive would use the smaller sata cables... not to mention some sata drives dont supports the regular power connector.
