Cannot Auto-Address New Outlook 2003 E-Mails :

That is … when I create a new e-mail and click on “To” I get the following error message:

“! The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Office Outlook Help.”

Background:
My desktop computer went kaput recently and I’m now using my laptop. I did all internet/e-mailing on the desktop. I hadn’t used the laptop for internet/e-mailing since I left NY last June to live in PA. I’ve since changed my ISP from @nyc.rr.com to @comcast.net and I made this adjustment, first to the desktop, and then to my laptop when the desktop failed. Both computers have a legal, registered copy of Outlook 2003.

Just before the desktop went down, I had backed up my desktop Outlook.pst file to an external HD. On the laptop I first deleted the old message folders and moved the Outlook.pst file to another drive. I then restored the desktop Outlook.pst file to my laptop’s Outlook 2003.

On the laptop I now receive new e-mails OK and I can reply to received e-mails. But, when I try to address a new e-mail by clicking on “To”, I get the aforementioned error message.

Where did I so obviously go wrong … and how can we resolve this? In layperson’s terms please … I’m not a computer geek by any stretch.

Thanks.

When you restored the pst it restored the mails and contacts too ?
If not the pst is broken / damaged

When I restored the Outlook.pst file to the laptop I retrieved my message folders just fine and, I assume, the Address Book (Contacts). I say "assume" since I only deleted the old laptop message folders ... not the old Address Book as I wasn't sure how to do this.

So I'm not totally sure which Address Book I now have. I just know that whenever I create a new e-mail and clock in "To" I get that error message.

Wouldn't the restored Outlook.pst have overwritten an older version on the laptop?

Thanks.

restoring a PST over another updates it.
Your old contacts wll remain intact, only newver contacts will be added.
Strange though.
Try backing up everything (again) then repair Outlook from the cd.

How do I repair Outlook 2003 from the CD as you suggested? It's been so long since I originally installed the MS Office 2003 suite of programs. [I have the original CD plus Serial#/Product Key.]

Can I select just Outlook 2003 and do a "repair"?

Thanks.
