cannot close explorer.exe????

Hi everyone.
My computer has a problem.
Everytime I shutdown it says cannot close explorer.exe and I have to close it manually before it shuts down. It's really weird. Is it some program I installed or what? It does it every single time I shutdown. I need to fix this so I can just press Shut Down, turn off my monitor and just go and not wait for the box to come up saying cannot close explorer.exe and close it manually. Please Help!

Try this:

Open "run" from the start menu
Type "regedit"
Now go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Control Panel>Desktop
Double Click AutoEndTasks
Change Value to 1

That might do it for you.

explorer.exe is the shell (basically desktop, start menu, taskbar etc.) that Windows runs.

What OS are you on?

It could be a number of things likes windows updates - install the latest one's. Virus's or you could of deleted a system file by mistake using spybot are something like that. How long have you been getting this error for? also can you remember what you did before it happened like installed new software etc.
 
i'll try going to regedit

umm im not quite sure what i installed before
i just install everything at once
photoshop
antivir
lavasoft spyware scanner
flash player
shockwave player
java
adobe reader

those are the things that i first installed

oh by the way im on windows xp professional service pack 2

the regedit thing worked but just one problem

the little box doesn't come up saying cannot close explorer.exe anymore
but it takes about 5 seconds for it to start shutting down

on my brother's right when he clicks shutdown it starts to shut down
but not on mine

is there a way to force all processes to end when i click shutdown in the start menu without giving it any extra time?
