Cannot copy and paste files to external hard drive

I've had my WD external hardrive for over a year now and has no problem copying files from my desk top to the external hard drive until today. When I try to copy and paste an error message reads " cannot locate source file or disk"

can anyone help me ?

find the drive in explorer.
Right click the drive then properties.
Go to tools tab and check for errors.

do you have a high gb of files on the drive, if not might be a good idea to backup the files, then reformat the drive, and copy the files back
