when I power on the computer, the windows xp freeze in the middle . then I tried to reinstall windows xp by CD-ROM, but when screen display " search for previous version of windows", it freeze for ever so I cannot even format hard drive. Can anyone tell me what I should do to make the system work? Thank you very much.

will need more detail, how old is the HD and how long have you been using?

also does the freeze of xp starts after the step where it says repair xp or are you just reformating from scratch to install?

the HD is brand new. actually after buying the new HD, I successfully installed the windows xp system. and then I tried to install update and also installing another anti virus software. it suddenly crashed.
