Cannot format

My old computer would not start today. When I ran the Millenium boot disk, it says I need to run scandisk. While running scandisk, I get a message saying that it could not fix the errors on my hard drive Okay, so I decide to format the hard drive. That's when I get this message, "Checking existing disk format. Recording current bad clusters. Complete. Verifying 6,149.85M. Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable. Format terminated"

So, is this as bad as I think it is?

Track 0 contains the MBR "Master Boot Record" without the MBR you can't go
because it also contains "Partition Table" which contains the info of the partitions.
if this Track is screwed then the HDD is gone.

Sounds like a bad harddrive. Look around for a low level format utility. Run that then try a standard format. Sometimes that'll work.
