Canon ---> Computer issue

I have recently filmed something and wanted to transfer my videos onto the computer, but with no avail.
My computer is an iMac, and my camcorder is a Canon Vixia HV30 Hi-Def. I am using a belkin firewire cable
to connect the cam to the computer, but the computer cannot recognize it at all when trying to capture the video in the program iMovie09.
I wonder if the camcorder is not compatible
with an apple computer or that the computer's firewire port somehow has a defect or something.

Actually I figured out what was the problem.
It was the firewire port on the mac that had expired from maybe using the wrong cord for the job. Well I guess its time to go and fix it!
