Can't access protected file on old hard drive

I'm a newbee here and really hoping someone may have an answer. Last December our computer system crashed. The power source fritzed. On a positive note, it was a good time to by a new computer anyway. We linked up our old hard drive via an external system to access the information and it has worked like a charm. I had one folder that was protected on my old system that has alot of photos etc in it. Of course the new system does not recognize me as the user and I can not access it. Shows 0 files in the folder and there's about 200 pics in it.

Anyone know a back door way to unprotect the file or at least get it to the point of where it will ask for a password? When I access the old hard drive, I can find the .dat files with certificates but I don't know how to link the old hard drive user accounts to the new system...Hope that makes sense. Thank you for your time.

You could try to bootup your computer to Linux try copy files there.
I'm not sure it would work but it won't do any harm :)
(Something like Freespire. You don't need to install it. Just pop cd into the cdrom and restart. It will boot to Linux).

Someone made the suggestion of making a user account and password exactly the same as the old computer had.
login and see if you can access the pictures.

Let me know.
