Can't Adjust Fan Speed with Software?

I've recently had the problem of my fan turning on and off at idle and the temperatures fluctuating. I have an Acer 5100 and there is no way to control the fan from the user interface. So I cut the red wire from the fan, and tapped the +5v from the red wire in a USB cable, and viola! Full speed fan. Idle went from 38'C to 24'C, under full load from 67'C to 50'C. I haven't been able to get it above that. I will eventually add a variable voltage switch, and I should have a pretty nice setup. I'll add pics soon.
 
I'm still in the testing phase, so I'll solder when I get the potentiometer from radioshack. Pics will be up tomorrow morning.
