Can't burn onto some discs

I'm trying to burn discs with Nero and for some reason it will only burn onto Sony or Memorex DVD-R discs. Verbatim, Packard Bell and others won't work which seems odd - I thought they were good names.

I have a Sony VAIO A215Z.

This is what the Nero error report said - would be great if someone could translate it for me! Thanks a lot.

disable the windows burning controller in services

try restarting the computer and see if it works

if that doesn't help, it could be a conflicting controller from another cd/dvd creation program that you have installed.

what other programs do you use to burn?

nero is EXTREMELY fussy about other burning services.

Try uninstalling Sonic. If you do wish to use this in the future, ensure that you make a backup of the software, or have an instalation file or disc.

thanks. i uninstalled both sets of burning software, then re-installed sonic recordnow. it still can't cope with the dvds i've just bought. Of the DVDs (-R) I have tried, my VAIO can only record onto sony or imation. so that would suggest that there is nothing wrong with the hardware (?) But is it nevertheless normal that a 2004 VAIO can only cope with very few types of DVD-R? If so it totally sucks and I keep wasting loads of money on all sorts of different DVDs!

another thought - and apologies for my ignorance - but would it be possible to somehow download another dvd driver? i have checked all the current driver settings which all appear ok from what i have seen from other posts but is there something i could download which would override the driver?
