Can't capture video? (sigh)

I'm sure you will thrill in hearing my little story. I got a new computer for Christmas (Dell XPS 400) and it came with an s-video and audio output jack installed, hence I assumed I could capture video from my computer. I don't know what video card I have in here because I don't know where to find that information on the system.

I got a cable that would attach to the two aforementioned jacks, and on the other end they have standard a/v jacks, which I hooked right into my TV. (I assume I can do that as well? That way I can get things from VCR, PS2, DVD, etc, all in one place.)

But the only program I have to test this with is Sonic (still trying to snag a copy of Premiere or something). When I try to capture video, it doesn't even recognize that there are any devices set up to do so. Have I just been fooled by my assumptions? Please don't say I need to buy a capture card... I will cry. I haven't the money.

Thanks for any help.

vivo...

Um you would have to know more about your video card like the exact product model...you would need a vivo connection which stands for video in and video out....maybe a lil homework and your questions can be fully answered...

most s-video are output, and since u also stated that your audio jacks are output also, so you can output it to tv, and not input it in. have anything you tried work? if not, see if your video card has video capture capabilities.

other than that, you will need a video capture card, maybe something via usb like dazzle

download everest or something

it tells you what graphics card you have. It's most likely that your card doesn't have vivo. To capture video, you should have a special vivo plug thingy (that looks like s-video) and you plug in a cable which splits to video in and out (that's what mine has).

You most likly don't have a video capture card. Many Video card's come with S-vidieo or other OUTput jacks, so you can connet it to different things like your TV moniter, which can be good for DVD's and such.

I'm retarded. No surprise there.
Thanks for letting me know. I'll try saving up a few bucks to install a card, then. People have told me it's super easy to do.

Hehe... follow-up question...
This is a total shot in the dark, but now I that I got the capture card installed, the audio isn't working on it.

I'm using the same cable I mentioned in my first post, and I tried the AV end in both my VCR and cable box. I was able to capture video from both, but although I had the program I'm using set to "capture video & audio", I can't get any audio.

I made sure I had the audio cables hooked in the proper place on both ends... what else can I do? Could something be bad?
