Can't check for Windows Updates

When I try to check for Windows Updates, it says it can't because the service isn't running. As far as I remember, I've never deactivated it, but who knows, maybe I did at some point a long time ago. Where can I go to check this and reactivate it? The settings didn't seem to have anything, and right now it's going really slow and I can't do anything. Clicking a button, even "Cancel," is taking forever to respond.

Have you tired the windows update troubleshooter? Windows 10?

Where is that? I don't see a lot of options in the Control Panel. I'm also using Windows 7.

Windows 7 no longer has updates, it was end of life as of January 14th of this year. The free upgrade to windows 10 still exists.

Download the tool and then follow the prompts to upgrade this pc.

Oh wow. So is it not even possible to install updates that might have been available before January 14? I know it's probably been at least a year since I've done an update!

I'm also reluctant to upgrade to Windows 10. Everything works so well as it is, especially games.
