Cant connect to EA online

I purchased Madden 07 the other day and wanted to check out the online, but when I set up a match, someone joined the game but it keeps saying 'unable to connect' I tried turning off my virus protection and firewall, but it didnt help. Do I need to open ports or anything on my router?
 
I finally got to connect but the lag was unbearable although it said my ping was less than 40 and so was the guy I played against. It was choppy and took forever to get a play performed. Any ideas what would be causing all the lag? And if I need to open ports what ports need opened?
