Ok. Run the same combofix script in safe mode, it should help.

To fix the cd drive issue do the following. Click on the following link and click on the fix it box to download the fix and run it. Then reboot the system and see if the cd drive appears in "my computer" it should. If not, then go back to that link and do the manual edit in the registry.

Another option we have is that if you download a program called Teamviewer, I can access the system and do the repairs for you. I wouldn't be able to run combofix though as it disables the internet. Its up to you.

A few more things to do here.

1.

Please perform one more combofix script for me so we can get rid of some unwanted files and folders.

1. Go to Start > Run > type Notepad.exe and click OK to open Notepad.
It must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
2. Copy the text in the below code box

6. Then drag the CFScript (hold the left mouse button while dragging the file) and drop it (release the left mouse button) into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below. Important: Perform this instruction carefully!

ComboFix will begin to execute, just follow the prompts.
After reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it will produce a log for you.
Post that log (Combofix.txt) in your next reply.

2.

I see evidence of Avast antivirus in your combofix log but its not in your add-remove program list. If its not running then I suggest you to download and install it.

3.

I need you to uninstall the following software via add/remove programs.

Java(TM) 6 Update 16

Then go here to download and install the latest version of java.

Download and run Ccleaner

Again, only click on the green "download now" box.

*4*. Not instructed to but did because the windows installer is making me absolutely insane. It wants the cd for HP Smart Web Printing and Easy CD DVD Creator 6. Whenever anything is run it comes up and it has to be cancelled and closed several times before it will go away (only to reappear). I think this comes back to him using his carbonite desktop copy from his old computer and just slapping it on this computer. Found HP smart web printing online and downloaded and installed it. Installer still coming up for HP Smart web printing. Feel like I am in one of those monster movies slaying a monsters and I want to scream "die, die, die", only it won't freaking die!
5. Ran HijackThis. See log below.

The only reason windows installer keeps popping up is because of the machine being infected. The only way to stop this is to actually uninstall the programs that its wanting to install and then reinstall the product. HP's smartwebprinting doesn't really need to be reinstalled. Easy cd creator 6 is old and outdated. My advice would be to just uninstall both and don't reinstall them.

I see symantec/norton 360 in the combofix log. Is this the program being used for virus protection? Is it active at bootup and is it fully updated and not expired?

There is also one more thing I need you to do. I see remnants of AVG being installed on the system.

Other than this, I think we are done. Uninstalling the smartweb printing may stop the printer from printing though, i've seen this in the past. So you may have to reinstall the printer software afterwards. And as far as Easy cd creator, there are free programs out there that will do the same thing, such as cdburnerXP, IMGburn, and others.
