I am trying to fix a friends computer and he cant connect to the internet.

He is using windstream and he called them and they said that everything seemed allright so that the problem might be on his computer...

We tried to set the tcp/ip settings to automatically get ip addresses and all that and stil he cant connect...

He has a built-in 1394 net adapter which he used to connect his modem and i think thats the problem but still we tried to connect the modem through the usb connector and it still doesnt work...

I really had not seen this problem before so i dont know what to do...
Any help would be really apreciated!!!

1,maybe the line goes wrong.
2,it does none business with the setting of TCP/IP,of course, you can set it 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 .
3,fix the LSP.

The 1394 aka firewire adapter is not used for internet. You need to use cat5 cable for internet from your dsl/cable modem.

i have tried the pinging part in command promt and it displays 0% loss...
so the tcp/ip settings are correct..

and i am using a cat 5 ethernet cable with the dsl modem provided by the isp....

so i really dont know wat the problem is...
i even tried to hook the computer to my modem and it doesnt connent to the internet so the problem is in the computer...

help!!!!
plz
also as a side note (i dont get a blink light when i plug in the ethernet cable... but the driver is installed)

hmmm this is a tough one...
lets see...
go into event viewer and see if there are any errors
right click my computer -> click on manage -> then click on event viewer. go through the different options and see if you are getting any errors.

Try this...

First.. The light may not be on on the router but that doesnt mean its not working... who knows the light may have burnt out. I would try this. go to the command prompt..

type ipconfig
if it gives you a 169.254.x.x address somthing is wrong and it doesnt seem that the DHCP server is running. at that time you would wanna reboot both the router and the computer and try again...

After it works you SHOULD get a 192.x.x.x number as an ip address...
you might get a 172.16.x.x number either one will work.

After you get that write down the Default Gateway number
next you will wanna type...

Ping x.x.x.x

x.x.x.x is the default gateway number.

if it gives you 4 replys back you know that much is working
next try to ping yahoo... type

ping www.yahoo.com

you should get replies.. if not try this

ping 66.94.234.13

if that works then you have DNS issues on the computer..

if you can ping yahoo.com then try to browse.. if you cant browse but you can ping you more than likely have 1 of 2 things... 1st and most likely is a firewall. that will stop you from browsing sometimes.. disable it and try again

2nd could be spyware that is causing you to be unable to browse sites. you will need antispyware to fix this. Good luck!

well i talked to my computer teacher and he suggested that the ethernet card was bad because it didnt show up in device manager...
(i thought it did but i confused the firewire with the ethernet)

so im going to put in an ethernet card and try that...
