Can't connect to the internet

I just built my first pc to replace my existing desktop pc. It works and I have XP Pro SP2 running. The motherboard is a GA-EP45-UD3P with integrated ethernet LAN. I thought I could connect to the internet just by plugging in the LAN cable, but it doesn't. It works when I plug the cable into my work laptop. What am I doing wrong? Sorry if this is so internet 101. Thanks in advance.

You need to install the drivers that came on the CD for your motherboard. (onboard sound, LAN, video, etc.) Then you'll be able to connect to the internet.

I have a similar question as it has to do with LAN connections...
My laptop is connected through a LAN cable, and randomly decide that either it won't connect anymore or it will crash. When it crashes, the error report states that it is the network card. Should I reinstall the network card or is there some other way to fix this?
Thx
