Can't connect via ethernet

Hey. Me again. Help...my laptop connects beautifully to the internet wirelessly, but I can't seem to get it to work via ethernet cable. When I go into NETWORK CONNECTIONS, i see "Wireless Network Connection 5" and "1394 Connection." Am I missing the connection I need to use the ethernet cable? Also, in Device Mgr, it shows a yellow question mark by the ethernet controller. I'm assuming that's bad. I went to the manufacturer's site and downloaded the driver for LAN connection and unzipped it, but still no luck.

It has to be something within my laptop's settings. I don't know what I'm doing here, and I don't mind saying it. I like it when things work seamlessly. I don't know why computers have to be so darn complicated. They should be smart enough to fix themselves.

Could someone please advise?

Thanks.

BTW...I've already done the config/renew and config/release thing.

What is the make and model of machine you have? If you don't have the lan connection listed in network connections then you haven't installed the correct driver. Also what operating system are you using?

hi, thanks for the reply

My laptop is an Emachines w4620. I'm using XP home. I already have the LAN_Broadcom driver downloaded from the Emachines site. Thanks for your help so far.

Have you tried installing the driver? Unless there is a problem with the onboard lan port then the driver should install and you should get internet.

What about uninstall/reinstall driver, or update driver in manager? Did you check the driver to see that it is the new one?
