Can't decide what route to go (amd/intel)

So I am in the process of building a cpu for mostly gaming but some light photo/video editing and I already have some parts laying around. Just mainly looking for CPU/MOBO. Below is a list of parts I ALREADY HAVE.


Memory Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Storage Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" SSD
Video Card Asus Radeon R7 240 2GB
Case Zalman Z9 ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply EVGA 600W ATX12V / EPS12V
Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro (OEM) (64-bit)

I do plan on upgrading GPU later (either R9 290 or GTX 770) and I have a 2TB NAS so don't feel the need for more than 256GB of SSD right now. If needed I could always pull 1TB out of the NAS (only using 300gb right now) and put it in the case.

Not sure if I should go the cheap route or if I should spend the extra money on intel.

The two options I am looking at


CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core
Motherboard MSI 970A-G46 ATX AM3+
can bundle this package for $140

or

CPU Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150
Can bundle this package for $305

Would the intel outperform the AMD that much? What would you do?

I just sold ps4 because I was not happy with it and the games so I am coming back to PC's. I do have a sony vaio 13in i5 3337U with 6gb of ram and integrated graphics.

Budget builds always seem to use AMD cpu's because they are cheaper but if you really want better performance then Intel is better. The fx6300 is 2 years old already, the 4690k just came out earlier this year. My fx8350 almost comes close to being the same performance of the 4690k. But realize that the 8350 is an 8 core processor where the 4690k is a quad core processor and it gets better ratings.

Yea I guess a 6300 wouldn't be bad for what it is now, but has no room to grow. I'm trying to be cheap but I'll prob regret it in a few months if I go cheap. Problem is I start looking at the 4690k and at $305 with a mobo I could go up to a 4790k for an extra $50 or even the 5820k for an extra $200.
 
I would always go intel, every amd cpu I have used has been disappointing.

Perhaps in years gone by amd was much cheaper, but when I browse cpu ranges now I just don`t see it, bear in mind it may look like a better cpu for the money, but a dual core intel will out score an amd tri core in most benchmarks.

Also when browsing take note of the extensive range of intel processors at all price points and recent sockets, then look at the very small range of amd processors.

Not to mention an intel system is always easier to sell later on.

Chances are amd may have gone bust, if they didn`t win the contracts for the new next gen consoles.
 
You really compared two entirely different price points..

That being said the AMD options are pretty limited at this point. AM3+ is basically a dead socket, and FM2+ doesn't really offer any high end options. Broadwell is rumored to fit in a 1150 socket, so you might have a better upgrade path going a Z97/Intel platform as well.

The Vishera FX aren't inherently 'bad' but it sounds like you aren't particularly budget constrained if you're considering Haswell-E/2011-3 parts either.
 
Haswell E may be only 200 more dollars, but factor in the costs of the DDR4 memory and how your graphics card will bottleneck, and its really not worth it. I would consider maybe getting a 130$ i3, which wont give you overclockability, but buy a z97 chipset board and you can easily upgrade to Broadwell later on
 
Thanks for all the input, I think I have decided on the i7 4790k, The i5 is a nice option but I think for the money, hyperthreading with an i7 is worth the price difference. I don't do much video editing but I do enough to warrant it.

What's in your sig with the 3770K? Is that a different machine?

Oh okay. I was going to say you wouldn't need to upgrade from that. And since I'm here I'll toss in another vote for an Intel build.

I've got an AMD 8320 and it works great for the gaming I do and I don't regret my purchase at all. But if you've got a budget for an Intel, get an Intel.

I'm actually heading home from microcenter with an i7 4790k and asus z97ar

Makes sense to buy the best if you can afford it. I think you would have regretted going AMD if you could afford a 4790K. AMD don't really have anything in the same league as the i7s since the 8320 is an i5 competitor, really.

What I can afford and what i want to pay are different tho lol so far I am happy with my choice. Geekbenched around 14000, windows experience scores are all high (except GPU) but that will be upgraded.
