I've been searching around for a couple of options, and I found the AMD Phenom II X4 960T, 3.00GHz. How reliable is it? So far, I have two theoretical configurations (I really can't decide what to buy, everybody has a different opinion)

Setup #1

  • CPU LGA1155 Intel Core i3-2100, 3.10GHz/3MB BOX 32nm
  • MB LGA1155 iP61 Gigabyte GA-P61-USB3-B3, PCIe/DDR3/SATA2/USB3/GLAN/7.1
  • HDD SATA2 7200 500GB Hitachi Deskstar, 16MB
  • 2 x Memory DIMM DDR3 4GB 1333MHz, Patriot Signature CL9, PSD34G13332
  • DVD +/- RW LiteOn iHAS122-18B / SATA / 22xDVD/12xDVD
  • VGA AMD Radeon 6670 Sapphire 1GB/DDR5/DVI/HDMI/VGA/bulk/128bit/11192-14-10G
  • Case: Xigmatek Asgard
  • 600W Power Supply
  • 21.5" Monitor (LED)

with keyboard/mouse and wireless router this costs:
$776

Setup #2

  • CPU AM3 AMD Phenom II X4 960T, 3.00GHz/6MB BOX Black Edition 45nm
  • MB AM3+ 870 MSI 870S-C45 (FX), PCIe/DDR3/SATA3/GLAN/Raid/7.1
  • HDD SATA3 7200 500GB WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX, 16MB
  • 2 x Memory DIMM DDR3 4GB 1333MHz, Patriot Signature CL9, PSD34G13332
  • DVD +/- RW LiteOn iHAS122-18B / SATA / 22xDVD/12xDVD
  • VGA AMD Radeon 6670 Sapphire 1GB/DDR5/DVI/HDMI/VGA/bulk/128bit/11192-14-10G
  • Case: Xigmatek Asgard
  • 600W Power Supply
  • 21.5" Monitor (LED)

with keyboard/mouse and wireless router this costs:
$757

Which one should I buy if I want to keep this machine for years to come?

I see a lot of this Intel vs AMD fanboy war. Is Intel really that much better? I'm just looking for a midrange PC for office tasks, and the only game I'm interested in is Assassin's Creed. I don't care much for the generic shooters.

Thoughts? Thanks for the help.

they are basically the same computer just depends on what processor you want i would say amd but im a fan of them over intel...

...its hard to say because neither of those boards im much of a fan of...if it was a z68 on intel and 970 on amd...id say intel hands down, the i3 is faster

The z68 is really out of my budget and I think it's overkill. It's either going to be a iP61, iP67 or iH61 board.

I'm going to put in 8GB of RAM... so I won't have to upgrade later.

i3-2100 it is

I know that HDDs are expensive right now, but the only HDD that I have still has a PATA connector. :(

What is your budget for mobo?
is it possible to get P67?

if you dont mind us asking, where are you buying from?

But this is a Serbian site... so if you feel adventurous, you can look around.

The final config is this:

CPU: Intel i3-2100
MB: LGA 1155 iP67 Gigabyte GA-P67-DS3-B3, PCIe/DDR3/SATA3/GLAN/7.1
HDD: SATA3 7200 500GB Seagate Barracuda
MEMORY: 2 x DIMM DDR3 2GB 1333MHz Patriot Signature CL9
DVD +/- RW LiteOn iHAS122-18B / SATA
VGA: AMD Radeon 6670 Sapphire 1GB/DDR5/DVI/etc.
CASE: Xigmatek Asgard
PSU: 600W ThermalTake LitePower
(Note:ThermalTake is the best I can get where I live. I don't live in the US, so I don't have access to many brands. Ordering stuff online would just make it more expensive.)

With a monitor and everything else I want, it's roughly $775... and I'm really pushing my budget.

I live in Serbia.
