Can't detect CD/DVD drive

This morning I got a new Gateway with Vista Home Premium, installed all the Windows updates, restarted many times, etc. But I found that if I try to open my DVD or CD drives on my tower, nothing happens.

When I go to the Device Manager, it does not show a "DVD/CD Drive" option. It simply shows "Computer, Disk Drives, Display Adapters, Human Interface Adapters", etc, but does not have a DVD/CD Drive option to expand.

If I go to Start > Computer, I can see these drives:

Compact Flash (E:), Combo Socket (F:), SD/MMC (G:), and Memory Stick (H:), but nothing else.

Could I have plugged something in wrong? If I go into BIOS, under what setting would I check for the CD/DVD drives to see if it's a hardware problem?

thanks

Usually when drives won't open that means there's a hardware problem. I'd suggest you confirm the drives still work elsewhere outside windows. Perhaps to boot from some kind of CD.

As for checking the bios, I'm unfamiliar with the layout of current Gateway machines. However, it's normally one of the first options, perhaps "Standard Settings" or something like that. However, many times they are just automatically detected during POST.

You could also try to pop the computer open and disconnect the drives. Sometimes if it's say a bad motherboard, the drives won't do anything when they have their interface plugged in. However, if you unplug the interface and leave power to them, they will begin to eject and what not.
