Can't do a reformat or reinstall

G'day all,
My desktop is a 2.6 gig Pentium 4
Windows XP

I'm wanting to do a reinstall due to viruses etc.
A complete wipe or just a reformat, I'm not fussed, just want it clean.
I have done a backup of doc's etc to a portable hard drive.
Now I've spent the last couple of days trying to do this without luck.
There is always an error message or freeze every which way I go obviously due to the viruses?.
I have a couple of discs that came with the computer being XP home but I have also a bought copy of XP pro that I installed into a now not used computer that I would prefer to load. But really at this stage I'm not getting too fussed as I just want to get this sorted.
I've tried a couple of programs like Eraser and Killdisc without any luck.
Is there any way of forcing a format or reinstall?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Al.

Can you still boot into windows? It's very possible that we can clean this system of malware for you depending on how badly infected it is.

Are you booting to the install cd and not actually trying to install while windows is loaded already? Viruses will not stop you from doing a fresh install by booting to the cd. Giving us the error message might help us determine what is going on. You may have bad ram or hard drive or something else.

Thanks for the reply John.

I'm responding from this computer atm even though I have the laptop.

What I have been trying to do is a clean install as the computer is slow, cluttered and takes at least 15 min to finish starting up.
Seeing as I have the discs and the option of two, this was what made the most sense. I tried to wipe the hard drive first with a couple of programs of the net without success, then tried to do a reformat from the CD's without luck. I've since tried to get the error message but it has frozen just prior to the message since then. Sometimes it will recognise the CD but go no further then other times it says "boot from CD" and freezes even though there is a disc loaded.

I'll go back and see if I can get another error message.

OK,
With the XP Pro disc, hitting the F12 key (Don't hit any key it goes straight into Windows) it goes to the boot menu. I select CD rom. It reads "press any key to boot from CD" Says Windows setup briefly at the top of the screen then the error message "file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7" Setup cannot continue.

Using the No 1 disc that came with the computer, hitting F12 on startup I get "Boot from CD:" 1.fd 1.44mb system type- (of) and won't do anything from here.

Thanks
Al.

Either bad cd, cdrom drive, bad memory. Is the cd scratched? Might want to test your cdrom drive in another system. Having bad memory will cause the sort of issue you are describing. Download memtest86 and burn the iso image to cd and then boot to the cd to test the memory.

Two different CD's so maybe CD rom or memory. I've been having problems with all cd/drives since what I think is infection. I've tried alot of cleaning methods without success. I'll burn memtest86 with the laptop to avoid any issues.
I'll report back soon.

Thanks mate.

Like I said, the infection will not stop you from reinstalling windows. If all else fails we can try cleaning the infection. Not sure what tools you have tried to remove them but there are plenty.

Not having much success.
Only been using anti virus software, malwarebytes etc to try and remove viruses.
What would you recommend for a clean?

Thanks.

I would need to see logs from malwarebytes and hijackthis to determine what could be on your system. You may already have malwarebytes on your system but please follow this procedure to redownload it and update it so I know you have the latest version.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

I'm trying to pull the log up as an attachment, but it isn't working.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong unless there is another way?

Thanks.

Sorry John. I've spent the last hour or so trying to get the log to copy and paste through Internet Explorer and Firefox without any luck.

I can hit "copy" but when I try to "paste" it isn't highlighted.

I transfered the log to the laptop and tried it from there without success also.

Here is your hijackthis log. Can you email me a current malwarebytes log?

Nothing major stands out. However, you may have something hidden. Please perform the following procedure and if you have to email the logs to me thats fine, I'll post them in the forum for you.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running
